Common Questions

We know fertility care can feel overwhelming. Here are answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask as they begin their journey.

When should I seek fertility care?

If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you are over age 35), it’s a good time to schedule an evaluation. You may also benefit from seeing a provider sooner if you have irregular cycles, a history of miscarriage, or known conditions such as PCOS or endometriosis.

Does age affect fertility?

Yes. Fertility naturally declines with age, especially after 35. This is due to both a decrease in the number and quality of eggs. Seeking early evaluation can help guide your options.

What initial testing is done for fertility evaluation?

Initial testing may include bloodwork (Day 3 labs to check ovarian function), a semen analysis for male partners, and imaging such as a sonohysterogram with bubble test to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes.

What is IUI? Who can benefit from it?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus to increase the chance of fertilization. It can help patients with cervical issues, mild male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, and same-sex couples or single parents using donor sperm.

How is IUI timed with my cycle?

We use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) to track your luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. Once you get a positive result, you’ll call our office and typically come in that same day for the procedure.

How many cycles of IUI should we try before considering IVF?

Every patient’s situation is different. On average, we recommend you try 3–5 cycles of IUI before exploring IVF, depending on age, diagnosis, and personal preferences.

Insurance & Coverage

Fertility treatment coverage depends on your specific insurance plan. Please contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage. Prior authorization may be required before starting certain treatments. Note: Federal insurance plans are exempt from state infertility coverage requirements. A diagnosis of infertility, as recognized by a healthcare provider, is required to utilize fertility treatment coverage.
